A major problem that many new cat owners have is getting their cats to use the litter box. There are professionals that can be hired to take care of this issue. But, if you aren't willing to pay, you can certainly do it yourself.

1. You should first get a litter box that an adult cat can easily fit in. The box should be also easily accessible for a kitten. Once you have the box, fill it about half way up with litter. Both the box and litter can be purchased at any pet store for a relatively inexpensive price. Litter boxes can be purchased for under twenty dollars, and litter for less than ten. You should also try using boxes that are covered and uncovered. Let the kitty decide what it prefers.

2. The box should not be anywhere near the cat's food or water. It should rather be in a peaceful place that isn't disruptive.

3. Once you have filled the box with litter you must locate your cat.

4. With the cat watching, you should take your fingers and scrape them through the litter. This allows the cat to see that this is a substance that they can dig in. A.k.a. a place where they can bury their waste. Cat's are very clean animals. They clean themselves obsessively. This in turn has an effect on how they handle there waste. They sense that it is dirty and therefore want to get rid of it.

5. This should usually take care of the problem. If after your cat has been using the litter box it begins using the bathroom in other places, the cat may have an infection. This is immediate cause to take them to a veterinarian.
